Peripheral Nerve Fellowship

Surgical Training

The fellow will be an active participant in the clinic where they will develop an understanding of the diagnosis of nerve injuries and observe the results of surgical interventions. They will also have a role in evaluating the patients in the pre-operative and post-operative period. The fellow will participate in operative nerve releases and reconstructions under the guidance and mentorship of faculty. The development of microsurgical skills will be fostered through microsurgical training in the laboratory and then implemented for patients in the clinical setting. The fellow will also spend valuable time with the neurologists learning the basics of electrodiagnostic studies, as well as with nerve specialized hand therapists, to understand the perioperative treatment of nerve disorders.

Our faculty will be closely involved in your training, while giving you the opportunity to gain confidence and independence. You will participate not only as a trainee, but also as a teacher, working closely with plastic surgery residents and medical students.

Research

Faculty in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery have a wide range of research interests. The fellow has the opportunity to collaborate and conduct research within the department labs, including ongoing clinical trials and clinical studies. Attendance is expected at weekly basic science laboratory meetings, where both basic science and clinical studies are discussed. This provides the opportunity to develop critical understanding of the science and physiology of nerve regeneration.

• Your current CV/resume: It must include a listing of your publications, presentations, research and grant experience, activities with professional societies and any other relevant information about your education or experience
• Personal statement
• USMLE (or alternate scores)

• Three letters of recommendation: These should be from physicians or faculty members who are familiar with your work. Authors should address your professional, academic and personal qualifications, including their opinion of your potential success in the field of Peripheral Nerve Surgery.

Prerequisites

Prior to the fellowship beginning in July 2023, all candidates must have:

• Completed residency in plastic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery or general surgery 
• Demonstrated interest in peripheral nerve pathology and surgery
• Have funding from an external source. We currently do not have established funding for this position; candidates must obtain funding from their home institution or an outside source.

Program Credentials

The Peripheral Nerve Fellowship is a 1-year ACGME accredited program.

International Candidates

Our institution most frequently sponsors J-1 visas on a case-by-case basis, however, we are not able to guarantee sponsorship of any type of visa.
