Our visiting professors help to provide world-class training to our students. Over the years this program has grown into a robust and essential aspect of education at Washington University School of Medicine.

James Barrett Brown Visiting Professors
Each year, for James Barrett Brown Resident Research Day, we feature a prominent speaker in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
James Barrett Brown, MD, (1899-1971) was Chief of Plastic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine from 1955 until 1968, and holds an ongoing legacy of support for plastic surgery research at the School. The Barrett Brown family has been instrumental in advancing academic plastic surgery through the sponsorship of clinical visiting professors.

Patrick Garvey, MD, FACS, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center 2019 Plastic Surgery Foundation Visiting Professor
Dr. Patrick Garvey (seated in middle) with plastic surgery residents presented talks on April 23 and 24, 2019, including Virtual Surgical Planning in Head and Neck Reconstruction and Breast Reconstruction in Obese Patients. Dr. Garvey is an associate professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas – MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Amir Dorafshar, MBChB, FACS, FAAP, Rush University Hospital 2018 American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons Visiting Professor
In September 2018 our American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS) visiting professor was Dr. Amir Dorafshar from Rush University (sitting second from left). Dr. Dorafshar is professor, chief and program director of the Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program at Rush University Hospital in Chicago. While here, he spoke about the future of craniofacial surgery and advances in facial trauma.
Jeffrey Kenkel , MD, UT Southwestern Medical Center 2018 American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Visiting Professor
Dr. Jeffrey Kenkel (sitting second from left) visited our plastic surgery division in August 2018 to present advances in body contouring as well as safety and execution of non-surgical device based facial rejuvenation and facial injectables. He is currently the Betty and Warren Woodward Chair in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas – Southwestern in Dallas. Our “In-House” Visiting Professor, Dr. Ida Fox (front row, third from left), presented at our division’s annual Residents and Fellows Day on February 14, 2018. In addition to speaking on “Nerve Transfers in Spinal Cord Injury” and “Transitioning from Residency to Attending-ship – Final Fond Facts,” Dr. Fox gave attendees special Godiva chocolates to help celebrate Valentine’s Day. Dr. Fox is an associate professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

On May 24, 2017, David Staffenberg, MD, visited the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is the chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center. In May 2016, faculty and residents enjoyed a night out at Ballpark Village watching the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Chicago Cubs with visiting professor, Michael Zenn, MD (third from left). Dr. Zenn is a professor of plastic surgery at Duke University. While here, he spoke about flap resection and one-stage breast reconstruction with nipple-sparing mastectomy and implants.
