Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery includes a variety of techniques that can transform your silhouette by making your breasts proportional to the overall shape and size of your body. In addition to changing the shape and size of their breasts, many people are also interested in having their breasts lifted to help achieve a more youthful appearance.

Surgical Techniques

You and your surgeon will discuss the various breast augmentation options available to you. In general, implants—whether silicone or saline—can be used to alter the size and shape of your breasts. Another option is a fat transfer, which relocates tissue to the breast area. Sometimes a fat transfer is done in combination with implants.

In addition, breast augmentation can be combined with a procedure called a breast lift, or mastopexy, which lifts the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening tissue.

Individualized Treatment

Your plastic surgeon will work with you to understand your goals, then discuss the various treatment options available to you, including the option of combining breast augmentation with a breast lift. Working together, you’ll consider the treatment options noted below and create a treatment plan that meets your particular needs.

Implants vs Fat Transfer

Fat transfer is used when the goal is to subtly enhance the size of the breast. For more a more dramatic change, implants are used—though implants also can achieve subtle results similar to fat transfer.

Implant Size

Your surgeon will work with you to determine the implant size that will best achieve your goals. When considering implant size, it’s important to keep in mind your chest size and your overall anatomy. Your surgeon will be able to offer you a variety of implant sizes for you to try before surgery, and you can also use our Vectra 3D simulation tool to visualize how different implant sizes will affect your silhouette.

Scar Location

Your surgeon can make incisions in the fold under your breast (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar) or in the armpit (axillary). Based on the information your surgeon gives you, you can determine the scar location that best fits your lifestyle.

Recovery After Surgery

Most patients report that pain and swelling are most difficult the first week or two after surgery. We’ll ask you to refrain from working out or lifting heavy objects for four to six weeks after surgery. Swelling will noticeably improve in the three months after surgery. At one year after surgery, you will fully realize the results of your breast augmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

Though your specialist will be happy to answer any questions you might have about breast augmentation, the following answers to some of the questions we hear most often from patients might help you prepare for your consultation.

How do I get a natural result from breast augmentation?

You’ll achieve the best, most natural-looking results by working with an experienced and board-certified surgeon. You can help ensure you get the results you want by communicating your goals clearly during your consultation.

Does breast augmentation affect the ability to breastfeed?

Most women can breastfeed successfully after breast augmentation because the surgery does not affect the ducts involved with lactation. Because some women without breast augmentation have difficulty with breastfeeding—and some who’ve had augmentation experience no difficulty—it’s difficult to predict the outcome for an individual patient.

Can I sleep on my stomach after surgery?

There are different recommendations, depending on the plastic surgeon. We recommend you discuss this thoroughly with your surgeon to clarify best practices that support good results. Typically, we recommend that you sleep on your back for six to 12 weeks after surgery, giving implants a time to heal in place.

What do I need to know before having breast augmentation?

Keep in mind that every woman’s breasts are asymmetric, and a breast augmentation will not correct every asymmetry. You should also be aware that breast implants do not last a lifetime; it’s likely you will need to replace yours because of changes your body—and your implants—undergo over time.

Will I need to have a breast lift and breast augmentation?

Your breast tissue changes over time—as the result of breastfeeding, weight loss and the natural aging process. Placement of an implant will improve volume but it won’t alter the shape of the breast. Only a breast lift, or mastopexy, can achieve that result. It is possible to have breast augmentation and breast lift at the same time.
